What is GIMP?

Gimp is a free, open-source, image editing tool.  More robust than pixlr.com and picmonkey.com and less complicated than Photoshop.

As much as I’m learning to love Photoshop, sometimes I find it quicker and easier to use Gimp to accomplish a certain task.  Here, we’ll use Gimp to extract a piece of an image that is favicon worthy, color it up a bit, and make the background transparent.  I’ve broken them down into a 3-part series:
