How To Update WordPress Themes and Plugins

The reason it’s important to stay on top of your updates is SECURITY.  The second most important reason is bugs.  Bugs?  That’s lingo for things are broken.

  • WordPress Updates

    • From what I’ve experienced, most WordPress updates add features to make the site owner and designer’s lives easier.  You want things to be easy, right?  Take a few minutes to do the 5 steps below.
  • Plugin Updates

    • Like I mentioned before, these updates are typically for security and bugs.   They found what’s broken and fixed it.  All you have to do is login, click a checkbox, press a button, and Viola!  All fixed!
  • Themes

    • Here’s the really fun part.  Lately, my theme has had TONS of updates.  I was a little nervous at first.  Wondering if the thing was just super broken or had many security flaws, but what I found was they are adding shiny new toys to it everyday.  Things that make my life SO much easier as a webmaster!
      • Updates included:
        • More drag & drop functionality
        • More header options
        • More premade layouts
        • Extra modules
        • …and so much more!

So here we go:

  1. Login to your WordPress site
  2. Typically
  3. Make sure to do a backup of your site before doing any updates!
  4. You should have updates set on auto-pilot so you never have to even think about this step.  Once you do set backups to be automatic, you’ll be down to 4 steps for your monthly maintenance updates.  See how to do that below.
  5. How to Backup your WordPress Site and Set It on Autopilot

  11. Test your site to make sure nothing broke during this step.
  12. If it did, first off Don’t Panic.  Next, go check out the fixes part of this blog. <–Coming Soon.  If you have any issues, leave a comment and I’ll try to help you as soon as possible.
  13. Repeat steps 4 through 6 for each section that needs updates.
  14. Done!
